FAQ
1. Is marble a good choice for staircases?
Yes, marble is an excellent choice for staircases where elegance and visual impact are priorities. Its natural veining and polished finish create a luxurious look that works well in grand entrances, hotel lobbies, and high-end residences. However, marble is softer than granite and requires proper sealing and maintenance to withstand foot traffic.
2. Does marble become slippery on stairs?
Polished marble can be slippery, especially when wet. For staircases, it is highly recommended to use a honed (matte) finish or add slip-resistant treatments such as a brushed surface, grooved nosing, or anti-slip inserts. Safety should always come first on marble stairs.
3. What about marble treads and risers?
Marble treads (the horizontal step surface) and risers (the vertical part) are often cut from the same slab to ensure a seamless flow of color and texture. This creates a more cohesive look than using small tiles. Treads typically require a thicker slab (2–3 cm) for durability, while risers can be thinner.
4. Does marble need to be sealed for staircase use?
Absolutely. Marble is porous and can absorb spills, dirt, or oil from foot traffic. A high-quality penetrating sealer should be applied upon installation and resealed every 6–12 months depending on usage. Sealing helps prevent staining and makes cleaning easier.
5. What are the main disadvantages of marble on stairs?
The main disadvantages are: susceptibility to scratching and chipping from hard objects or heavy impacts; etching from acidic spills (wine, juice, cleaning products); slipperiness when polished and wet; and the need for regular sealing and maintenance. For high-traffic commercial stairs, harder stones like granite or quartzite are often recommended instead.
